Several UV inkjet printers utilize microwave driven UV lamps. These are also known as electrodeless UV lamps. This type of lamp is long lived and reaches full power quickly. Lamps are instant on/off and do not require mechanical shutter. Rather than passing electrical current between conventional electrodes, the mercury in electrodeless lamps is vaporized by irradiating the bulb with microwave energy. Unfortunately, the lamp assemblies tend to be large, and lamps require lots of cooling air.
